United’s New Routes Make Smaller Cities Easier to Reach

United Airlines has announced its largest international expansion to date, adding a series of new long-haul routes from the US in 2027.
For Palates & Miles, the announcement is not simply about the scale of the new routes. It is what they mean for how travellers can reach smaller cities and regions without a European hub connection.
New nonstop services to Ljubljana, Ibiza, Marseille and Luxembourg are particularly interesting. These are the kinds of destinations that often require a connection, or are folded into a longer itinerary involving larger, more obvious gateways.
Direct flights change this.
It will be easier than ever for North American travellers to build a trip around a specific city, coastline or region without needing to turn the journey into a full European summer itinerary.
The aircraft matters too. United’s new Airbus A321XLR, branded “Born to Explore”, will operate several of the new routes and is designed for international markets that do not require a larger aircraft. With United Polaris suites, Premium Plus seats and Economy Plus seating, it still gives the airline a way to deliver a premium cabin experience.
Before next summer’s expansion, United says the A321XLR will begin international service from Washington Dulles to Amsterdam and Dublin from 1 December. The Dublin route is worth noting, particularly as it may offer an early indication of how United intends to use the aircraft across the Atlantic on its existing routes.
We look forward to seeing how the experience matches the promise and which other UK and Irish routes may be switched to the A321XLR in time.
