Dromoland Castle Announces €55 Million Transformation

Dromoland Castle in Ireland has announced a €55 million transformation of its County Clare estate, marking the largest redevelopment in its 63 years as a luxury hotel.
Work will begin this November, with the Castle closing for six months before reopening in June 2027. The redevelopment will extend across accommodation, dining, wellness and public spaces, with the number of rooms and suites increasing from 96 to 121.
Among the additions will be a new 13-room Walled Garden Collection within the estate’s converted former stables and a 16-room Heritage Collection, including five suites. Existing guestrooms and public areas will also be redesigned as part of the project.
Dining will form an important part of the transformation under recently appointed Executive Chef Kevin Fleming. A new Grill restaurant will introduce an open kitchen and live-fire cooking, while the Earl of Thomond will be refurbished with a renewed focus on tableside service. Who doesn’t love a trolley? Dromoland’s third Walled Garden will also return to productive use, growing produce for the estate’s kitchens.
Perhaps the most noticeable change will be a new 3,200-square-foot glass-enclosed Atrium within the Castle’s historic courtyard. Opening in July 2027, the space will act as the beating heart of the hotel during the day before transitioning to a more intimate setting for cocktails and live music in the evening.
Wellness is also receiving greater attention. The Castle Spa will gain an expanded thermal offering, while two glass-fronted saunas will be added on the shores of Lough Dromoland, the estate’s private lake.

The scale and timing of the investment are particularly worth noting. The West of Ireland is preparing for considerable international attention in 2027, when the Ryder Cup returns to Ireland. Dromoland is also well positioned for international visitors arriving through Shannon Airport, making the redevelopment an important addition to the wider luxury hospitality offering across the region.
More importantly, the investment extends beyond 2027. The additional rooms, new restaurants and greater use of the wider estate should strengthen Dromoland’s position as a destination in its own right and add further depth to the luxury hotel offering in the West of Ireland.
The Castle will close from November 2026 until June 2027, while Dromoland’s golf course, clubhouse, leisure centre and private lodges will remain open throughout the redevelopment.
