Hart Shoreditch | Contemporary Comfort with an Edge

Hart Shoreditch is a property that creates its own identity through design and atmosphere. Being part of Hilton’s Curio Collection gives it room to craft its own narrative and avoid the trap of a cookie-cutter portfolio property. Set within an area of London known for its individuality and edge, Hart Shoreditch embodies this in both spirit and practice.

With just 126 rooms set over six floors, the hotel doesn’t need to be loud or overbearing. Instead, it focuses on contemporary design, with the ground-floor lobby and bar providing a focal point throughout the day and into the evening, where guests can work, relax or watch the world go by. It is also home to UBA restaurant, which focuses on pan-Asian cuisine.

By far the hotel’s strongest asset is the design and layout of its rooms, which still feel modern and fresh six years after opening. Higher floors also benefit from panoramic views across London.

This Edit works for potential visitors to London who want a design-led base for exploring the city or those who are travelling for business. Located in Shoreditch, just north of the City of London, Hart Shoreditch is well placed for accessing both the capital’s business and historic centres. Shoreditch and nearby Spitalfields are also home to some of London’s new restaurants, putting good dining options within walking distance.

If you enjoy a property that offers relaxed but attentive service in a contemporary setting, this Edit is for you.

The standard

Every recommendation in this Edit is assessed against the same five points: service, design, food and drink, atmosphere and value. Value is not about cheap or expensive. It is whether the experience earns the time and price invested.

Arrival and first impressions

The entrance to Hart Shoreditch from Great Eastern Street sets the tone for the design, with original Victorian architecture combined with glass and ironwork. It creates a playful first impression before you even enter the hotel, hinting at what awaits inside. The entrance is set slightly back from the main street and is easy to miss if you are not looking for it. Positioned between two streets, the hotel’s triangular footprint also gives it a distinctive shape and charm.

The lobby opens up immediately upon entering, with the Lobby Bar to the right and a large, multifunctional workspace in the centre, used by guests throughout the day. Tucked to the left is the reception, which cleverly provides privacy for check-in formalities away from the busier open parts of the lobby.

The bright colours and communal atmosphere are immediately reassuring. Reception staff wear more casual attire, fitting the aesthetic and relaxed atmosphere of the space.

P&M note: There is no porter at the hotel to assist with luggage. However, luggage can be left with reception if your room is not ready upon arrival.

The King Deluxe Room

During this stay, a King Deluxe Room on the fifth floor was allocated. The room covers approximately 22 square metres and contains a large king-size bed. Upon entering, the brightness and openness of the space are immediately noticeable. What the room may lack in size is made up for in layout and design.

A large window, in this case looking out towards the city’s skyscrapers, brings in light that reflects off the bright white walls and grey wallpaper. The subtle use of white, grey and beige, with occasional orange accents, creates a calm and relaxing environment. An interesting feature is the luggage nook formed by the space around the shower’s maintenance access point. This sits next to the wardrobe, which contains a built-in safe and additional storage.

Behind the wardrobe is a integrated minibar and coffee station with an espresso machine. A desk with a mirror and stool sits in front of the window, providing a useful space for working and getting ready. A small cushioned chair beside it offers additional seating for relaxing. Beneath the TV, a console holds a carafe of filtered water and some decorative books.

The bathroom, whilst small, contains a walk-in shower with both an overhead and hand-held shower. There is also a toilet and single vanity with a large mirror flanked by two wall-mounted lights. The gold trims and finishes are particularly noticeable, adding warmth and contrast to the space.

The Lobby Bar after dark

Whilst UBA restaurant at the front of the hotel is frequented by hotel guests and Londoners alike, the Lobby Bar is the heart of the hotel’s social spaces. Located to the right of the main lobby, this intimate space allows guests to enjoy the property’s relaxed hospitality. Open daily from 11am to 11pm, it transitions from a daytime spot for coffee and light bites to a place for cocktails and bar bites in the evening.

There is also an honesty shop where snacks and other treats can be purchased during the day, further supporting the hotel’s laid-back approach. Cocktails in the Lobby Bar extend UBA’s pan-Asian approach, with sake and gin cocktails taking centre stage. The Blushing Geisha and Mandarin Star were particular standouts for their flavour and originality.

Bar bites, including small plates, salads and sushi, are available throughout the day and evening should you want something less formal than what’s served in the restaurant.

P&M note: Whilst the space is open to the rest of the lobby, it still feels intimate and separate. Seating at the bar offers a different way to enjoy the space, if that is your preference.

Service and value

Service was relaxed, consistent, friendly and approachable. Check-in was efficient and to the point, with the team keen to explain the Hilton Honors benefits and features of the room. Their explanation of the filtered water provided in the room’s carafe, including how to refill it, was particularly useful as this was a little different from the usual bottled offering.

Service in the Lobby Bar was equally friendly and approachable, although the single team member was stretched at times during busier periods. This was understandable, particularly given the need to collect food from the kitchens shared with the restaurant.

Value here lies in having a comfortable and consistent space to relax during the day or evening. Whether in the public spaces or your room, this is easily achieved, making the stay a worthwhile investment of time and money.

How to plan a stay

Hart Shoreditch works well for those looking for a casual, comfortable base when visiting London, including those travelling for business. It is within easy walking distance of Liverpool Street station, around 15 minutes away, and Old Street station, around 10 minutes away.

Shoreditch High Street is also a short walk from the hotel, with plenty of independent restaurants and bars nearby. Spitalfields Market, known for its shopping and food outlets, is within easy walking distance too.

Whether visiting for one night or a longer stay, the dining options within the hotel and local area make it a practical base. It is also convenient for those who need good transport connections.

Check current rates and availability

P&M notes

  • Booking in advance is advisable, particularly during the working week or holiday periods. Its location close to the City makes it a popular choice.

  • The hotel is part of Hilton’s Curio Collection. Hilton Honors benefits depend on your membership tier and booking eligibility, so check these and add your membership number when booking.

  • You can message the front desk through the Hilton Honors app with questions or requests before check-in or during your stay.

  • Reservations are not required for the Lobby Bar, although there may be a short wait for a seat during busier periods.

Final thoughts

Hart Shoreditch has a clear identity, contemporary design and a relaxed atmosphere that make it at home with its surroundings. The King Deluxe Room makes good use of its space through thoughtful layout and functionality. Its bright interiors and views over the cityscape offered a nice touch.

The Lobby Bar gives the hotel a sociable focal point, whether for a coffee during the day or a cocktail in the evening. Together with the friendly, approachable service, it makes the public spaces somewhere you want to spend time.

For those visiting London for either a short or longer break, Hart Shoreditch offers a comfortable base with a little individuality.
